Album: I’ll Be Lightning

I always love when musicians procreate and spawn more amazing musicians. There is a fellow you should all know, if you don’t already; he is the child of the famous Neil Finn of the band Crowded House. Disclaimer: I’m reluctant to spotlight a person’s rise to fame as a result of their parents’ success, but with Liam Finn that is NOT the case at all.

Liam is very much a brilliant musician and a creative mind. Most know him through the works of Betchadupa (which I love). Liam’s first solo album, I’ll Be Lightning, is a beautiful and blissful listen.

I have had this album bouncing around in my head for a few years now, and it is always the album I come back to. Seriously, it is the Everlasting Gobstopper of my music collection. I keep trying to wear it out, but it always seems so fresh to me!

Perhaps it’s because each track is so diverse in its own way. Maybe it’s the amazing layers of sound or lyrical harmony that leads me back time and time again.

There is something so soothing, yet exhilarating, about Liam’s melodies and harmonies. I dig the use of instruments and synth, and the experimental sound mixed with the natural purity of his full beautiful voice:

This album’s composition flows so well. Each track feels more natural than the last and it kind of makes you think that this man was absolutely predisposed to make music. Each layer of sound on each of the tracks breathes and comes together in such a flawless manner. Just take it easy and bask in the ballads of this sublime album.

I’ll Be Lightning is just one of those albums you have to try on for size yourself. To me, it’s definitely a one-size-fits-all. I love that this album isn’t trying to be something it’s not. It never comes off at anytime as arrogant or unsure of itself. Liam is definitely imperfectly perfect.
