There is an album I can bravely identify as the last gasp of post-punk and the first breath of alternative as we knew it in the 90’s: The Stone Roses’ self-titled debut released in 1989.

This band definitely laid the path for some of the most inspiring music that would follow in its footsteps, all the while honoring the greats that came before it and inspired it. It’s known by many to be one of the most influential albums of all time, but some have declared it the greatest British album of all time.

The hook of the first track, “I Wanna Be Adored,” is one of the most beautiful songs I have ever heard. I cannot help but get hung up in every second of it. I am so deeply affected by this song:

The stylings of the self-harmonies are perfectly paired with the wailing of guitar. It seems as though the guitar parts are meant to be a duet with the lead singer’s voice, not a pillar. Neither one seems overshadowed or unimportant. The layered harmonies pair the guitar in the way multiple strings of the guitar sing together.

Each track on The Stone Roses is different than the last. The Stone Roses pulled something off that very few bands have ever done well: Each track could easily have been a top chart hit. One minute this album is heartbroken and melancholy, and the next it is on the psychedelic swirl (not unlike the later Beatles sound).

The Stone Roses, overall, evolves so gracefully. As the album carries on, it becomes expansive and self-aware without being cocky. Even the politically motivated album art is fascinating!

Unquestionably, The Stone Roses is an album you should start listening to early in life, and often. I give it 9.5 out of 10.
