From video games to the sounds of nature, this album creates a fictional world of wonder. I am not a huge fan of the 8-bit sound, but I must say that the sporadic computer and 8-bit synth sounds mixed with nature elements make Django Django a cerebral trip.

The tracks are catchy right from the start. The hypnotic sound of lyrics and varying tones makes you feel a little meditative. The track “Hail Bop” takes me to a time when I listened to DEVO and Pet Shop Boys:

In two tracks, this album goes from synthetic sounds to an almost folky mutation — 8-bit folk, perhaps? Each track idles in your mind long after the album is over. At times, it seems you are listening to a soundtrack that came straight out of what we might hear in science fiction setting. Like their music videos (which are just as psychedelic as some of their beats and lyrics), the band’s sound saturates you with a panoramic landscape, domed by a cosmic sky. It is impressive how the energy of this album is in no way exhausting. It has a well-defined sound that seems to intertwine with an interstellar imagination.

Time and time again and generation after generation, the Brits have left us in awe of their musical abilities; they’ll set a trend and then surpass it, leaving us with an insatiable appetite for more. So with respect to Django Django’s birthplace, I give this self-titled album 9.5 Union Jacks out of 10!
